We live in a world where materials are presented to us in abundance – most often pre-designed and pre-packaged. The message this sends us is that the process of creation is beyond our scope. Creating opportunities to mess about with loose parts and components – not just the finished product – enhances our ability to read the world and contribute to our community in meaningful ways. The way a child plays with a bag of store-bought shells is very different than the way a child might interact with a collection of shells gathered over time from shores they have visited with their family. That’s not to say that store-bought materials hold no value, only that we need to consider whether something has purpose and is designed with intention. Choosing materials that provide opportunities to explore the world in different ways from one moment to the next and from one person to the next, are key to future innovation and creation.
