There’s lots of talk about creativity these days – what it is, who’s got it, and how it relates to the way we learn. 21st century thinking requires creativity, so it’s important for us to know how to set the stage for purposeful creative expression. The first thing we need is a wide open space in our brains. Things like visual clutter, preconceived notions, and high expectations get in our way. In order to be free to explore ideas and materials we must begin by releasing our anxiety around challenging situations. We can take our cue from the outdoors – the ultimate creative environment. Nature is always changing. Whether we’re building a sandcastle or a snowman, growing a garden or crunching leaves, nature provides an ideal balance between the familiar and the novel. To bring this sense of wonder and discovery indoors, we need to ensure a similar balance of sights and sounds in the spaces where we create. The second thing we need is time – time for deep exploration and discovery, but also time to adjust to challenges the way we slowly adjust, and then eventually embrace, a new season. Always, it’s about providing the time and the space for true self expression to emerge.
